“You just have to believe, have a good mindset and focus on how you strike the ball, which is exactly what I did.”

LOS ANGELES: St. Louis City claimed the first trophy in the club’s history on Wednesday, defeating Major League Soccer rivals Columbus Crew on penalties to win the US Open Cup.

The match ended 0-0 after extra time in Columbus before St. Louis secured a 5-3 victory in the penalty shoot-out. Daniel Edelman converted the decisive spot-kick to seal the historic triumph.

Substitute goalkeeper Ben Lundt also played a key role, saving Columbus’ opening penalty from Santiago Rodriguez during the shoot-out.

Edelman Delivers Under Pressure

Edelman once again proved decisive against Columbus, having previously scored the winning penalty in a shoot-out to eliminate the club during the 2024 MLS postseason.

“Thankfully I’ve been there before and it’s all about the process when you step up,” Edelman said after the match.

“You just have to believe, have a good mindset and focus on how you strike the ball, which is exactly what I did.”

After converting the decisive penalty, Edelman sprinted the length of the pitch to celebrate with St. Louis supporters at Columbus’ ScottsMiracles-Gro Field.

Historic Night for St. Louis City

The victory delivered the first major trophy in St. Louis City’s history, marking a significant milestone for the club and its supporters.

“It’s the first trophy for me and a lot of guys and for the city,” Edelman said. “For us as a team it’s phenomenal to have this night and have this trophy.”

The US Open Cup is the oldest annual team tournament in the United States, with its inaugural competition held in 1913-1914.

St. Louis City joined Major League Soccer as an expansion team in 2019. The club’s cup triumph represents a landmark achievement as it celebrates its first piece of silverware.
