Unlike Olympic swimming competition, the Asian Games will use a preliminary and final format without semifinals.

The Asian Games swimming competition is set to begin on Saturday night, with the events continuing through Friday at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.

China will be among the teams to watch, with Zhang Zhanshuo entered in events ranging from the 100-meter freestyle to the 1500-meter freestyle. Thirteen-year-old Chinese swimming sensation Yu Zidi is also scheduled to compete in the 200-meter butterfly, 200-meter individual medley and 400-meter individual medley.

Japan will be represented by Tomoyuki Matsushita, who will aim to continue his strong form after winning gold in the 200m and 400m individual medley at last month’s Pan Pacific Championships in Southern California. He is scheduled to compete in the same two events in Tokyo, along with the 200m butterfly.

Teenage swimmers Yumeki Kojima, who is entered in the 200m and 400m individual medley, and Shin Ohashi, competing in the 100m and 200m breaststroke, will also be among Japan’s young talents.

Hong Kong’s four-time Olympic champion Siobhan Haughey will compete in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle. At the 2023 Asian Games, Haughey won gold in both the 100m and 200m freestyle and took silver in the 50m freestyle.
