Pakistan produced mixed results at the Asian Games 2026 on Thursday, with the hockey and squash teams continuing their winning runs while the kabaddi campaign ended with a heavy defeat to Iran.

Pakistan’s hockey team defeated China 3-0 at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium to record their third consecutive victory in the competition.

China created early opportunities but failed to convert two penalty corners, while Pakistan also missed chances from two penalty corners.

Pakistan took control in the second quarter, earning two penalty corners before being awarded a penalty. Abu Bakar Mahmood converted to put Pakistan ahead.

Sufyan Khan doubled the lead five minutes later with a penalty-corner goal before Hannan Shahid added a field goal two minutes before half-time.

Neither side could score in the second half as Pakistan completed a 3-0 victory.

Sufyan has now scored five goals in three matches, all from penalty corners. Pakistan will face Malaysia in their next Pool B match on Saturday.

Pakistan Squash Players Reach Quarter-Finals

Pakistan also enjoyed success in squash, with Noor Zaman and Mohammad Ashab Irfan advancing to the men’s singles quarter-finals.

Third-seeded Noor defeated Kuwait’s Ammar Altamimi 11-4, 11-9, 11-4 in 26 minutes.

Ashab also produced a convincing performance, beating Saudi Arabia’s Mohammad Al Alnafsan 11-9, 11-3, 11-5 in 36 minutes.

Noor, Pakistan’s top-ranked player, will face Hong Kong’s Chi Hin Henry Leung in the quarter-finals.

Ashab, ranked 49th in the PSA standings, will meet India’s Veer Chotrani for a place in the semi-finals.

Pakistan also progressed in mixed doubles after Asim Khan and Mehwish Ali recovered from a game down to defeat Japan’s Naoki Hayashi and Erisa Sano.

The Pakistani pair lost the opening game 11-8 before winning the second 11-10 and the deciding game 11-4 to complete the victory in 39 minutes.

Nasir Iqbal and Sehrish Ali, however, were eliminated after losing 11-2, 11-6 to Hong Kong’s Ming Hong Tang and Ka Yi Lee.

Pakistan Kabaddi Campaign Ends

Pakistan’s kabaddi campaign came to an end after a 51-30 defeat against Iran in their final Group B match.

Iran led 20-14 at half-time before extending their advantage in the second half, outscoring Pakistan 31-16.

Pakistan had entered the match after winning their opening two games against Malaysia and Nepal, but finished the group stage with two victories and two defeats.

Iran and Thailand advanced to the semi-finals from Group B, while India and Chinese Taipei progressed from Group A.

Maria Rind Eliminated in Boxing

Pakistan boxer Maria Rind was eliminated from the women’s 51kg competition after losing to Mongolia’s Yesugen Oyuntsetseg.

The referee stopped the bout at 31 seconds of the third round after Rind suffered two knockdowns in the final round. She had also been knocked down once in the second round and was behind on all five judges’ scorecards after two rounds.

Pakistan Athletes Exit in Athletics and Swimming

Pakistan’s Faiqa Riaz failed to qualify for the women’s 100m semi-finals after finishing fifth in her heat in 11.96 seconds.

In swimming, Mishael Ayesha Hayat Ayub finished third in her women’s 50m freestyle heat in 30.04 seconds and placed 30th overall.

Hamza Asif also failed to progress in the men’s 50m butterfly after finishing his heat in 26.37 seconds.

Fencing and Table Tennis Disappointments

Pakistan suffered further defeats in fencing, with Mohammad Waqas and Abdul Musawir losing all six of their respective men’s epee individual bouts.

Waqas was beaten by opponents from Kyrgyzstan, Qatar, Japan, Mongolia, Bangladesh and Hong Kong.

Musawir also suffered six defeats against opponents from Mongolia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

In table tennis, Mohammad Khan and Taha Bilal were both eliminated after suffering 4-0 defeats in their respective matches.

Mohammad Khan lost to Thailand’s Thitaphat Preechayan, while Bahrain’s Rashed Rashed defeated Taha Bilal.

Asad Iqbal Finishes Eighth in Rowing

In rowing, Pakistan’s Asad Iqbal finished second in Final B of the Lightweight Men’s Single Sculls.

He recorded a time of 7:06.72, finishing behind India’s Ajay Tyagi and placing eighth overall.

Pakistan’s mixed results across the day included strong performances in hockey and squash, while several athletes exited their respective competitions. The hockey team will now turn its attention to Malaysia as it continues its Asian Games campaign.
