TEHRAN: Iran has told the United States that it will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz unless several key conditions are met, including an end to the ongoing war, the release of frozen Iranian funds and an end to the US naval blockade.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who has been involved in negotiations aimed at ending the conflict, said Sunday that Tehran had communicated its conditions to Washington through mediators.

Mohsen Rezaei, who heads Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Saturday that the conditions had been passed to the US through Qatar.

“Our conditions are an end to the war on all fronts, the release of our frozen funds and an end to the naval blockade,” Rezaei said in an interview with Al Jazeera.

Iran refuses to reopen Strait of Hormuz

Ghalibaf said Iran’s position had been clearly communicated to the US and that Tehran would not return to normal operations in the waterway until its demands were addressed.

He said Iran could not reopen the Strait of Hormuz while the conditions remained unmet and US commitments were not honoured.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important shipping routes and a major pathway for global oil and gas supplies. Its continued closure has increased concerns about energy supplies, shipping and prices.

Qatar and Pakistan involved in mediation

Qatar has been acting as a mediator between Iran and the United States, according to Iranian officials.

Iran has also said Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is involved in diplomatic efforts. Iranian authorities said Naqvi was expected to travel to Tehran on Sunday for talks.

The mediation efforts come as Washington and Tehran remain locked in a prolonged confrontation.

Iran issues warning to US

Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Military Command also issued a warning to the United States on Sunday.

The command said any mistake by Washington in dealing with Iran could lead to attacks against US bases and interests across the region.

The statement was carried by Iranian state television.

The latest developments add to uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, with the waterway remaining a major point of tension between Iran and the United States.
