ISLAMABAD: Electricity consumers across Pakistan may face an increase of Rs1.73 per unit after the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) sought an adjustment in electricity tariffs under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism for August.

The CPPA has submitted its request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), which is scheduled to hear the application on September 29.

If approved, the proposed adjustment will also apply to K-Electric (KE) consumers.

According to the CPPA application, distribution companies received 14.464 billion units of electricity in August at an average generation cost of Rs8.82 per unit.

Electricity Generation Mix

Hydropower accounted for the largest share of electricity generation in August, contributing 37.84 per cent of the total.

Local coal accounted for 10.88pc, while imported coal contributed 15.59pc. Electricity generated from furnace oil stood at 2.15pc.

Local gas contributed 7.04pc, while imported LNG accounted for 8.48pc of total generation.

The CPPA reported that electricity generated from furnace oil cost Rs45.25 per unit, while power produced using imported LNG cost Rs45.92 per unit.

Previous Fuel Adjustment

NEPRA had previously approved a fuel cost adjustment of 75.03 paise per unit for June 2026, resulting in an estimated financial impact of around Rs9.8 billion on electricity consumers.

The June adjustment was applicable to consumers of K-Electric and ex-Wapda distribution companies, with certain exceptions.

The regulator had excluded lifeline consumers, electric vehicle charging stations and pre-paid electricity consumers who had opted for the pre-paid tariff.

The adjustment was also applicable to consumers covered under the incremental consumption package.

Distribution companies and K-Electric were directed to include the June fuel cost adjustment in electricity bills issued in August.

The latest Rs1.73 per unit adjustment will be decided by NEPRA after hearing the CPPA’s request on September 29.
