The protesters chanted antisemitic slogans, attacked police, and threw fireworks at riot officers, according to a Dutch minister.

Police clashed with several hundred far-right protesters in The Hague after demonstrators threw fireworks and other objects at riot officers during a protest on Saturday.

Violence broke out at Malieveld park in the city centre, prompting authorities to ban the planned march.

Dutch Justice Minister David van Weel said some protesters made Nazi salutes, used antisemitic slogans and attacked police officers with fireworks and other projectiles.

Van Weel wrote on X that authorities needed to take firm action against those involved and thanked police officers for protecting public order and the rule of law.

Police arrested several people following the clashes.

The incident comes about a year after another right-wing demonstration in The Hague also turned violent. During that incident, rioters clashed with police and damaged the offices of a political party.

Hundreds of people attended Saturday’s demonstration, with many wearing black and carrying flags calling for stricter asylum policies.

Police used riot-control measures, including tear gas and a water cannon, to disperse protesters after the violence broke out.

Another group of demonstrators moved towards the Dutch parliament complex, but police stopped them from entering the area.

D66 leader Rob Jetten, who has since become the Dutch prime minister, condemned the violence and said political parties should not be intimidated by extremist protesters.

Authorities have continued to deal with tensions surrounding demonstrations over immigration and asylum policies in the Netherlands.
