Michael Brennan Wins Baycurrent Classic in Japan, Holds Off Chasing Pack

He added that he tried to approach the round like any other and was pleased with how he handled the situation.

YOKOHAMA: Michael Brennan secured his third US PGA Tour title after holding off a competitive field, including defending champion Xander Schauffele, to win the Baycurrent Classic in Japan on Sunday.

The 24-year-old American carded a three-under-par 68 in the final round at Yokohama Country Club to finish at 16-under par, one stroke ahead of compatriots Jacob Bridgeman and Keith Mitchell.

Brennan produced four birdies and one bogey to clinch his second title of the year, further strengthening his position as one of the rising players on the US PGA Tour.

Starting the final round tied for the lead, Brennan admitted that he felt nervous but was better able to manage the pressure than in previous tournaments.

“Maybe I didn’t have full control over how I felt, but I was calmer today than I have been in weeks past when I’ve been in contention,” he said.

He added that he tried to approach the round like any other and was pleased with how he handled the situation.

Brennan Continues Remarkable Rise

Brennan claimed his maiden PGA Tour victory at the Bank of Utah Championship last year before adding another title at the Wyndham Championship in August.

After turning professional in 2024, he has quickly established himself as a player who can compete under pressure and deliver results at the highest level.

The American said he remained focused on his performance despite receiving increased recognition for his achievements.

“It’s nice to hear that people think highly of my golf game but it’s just my golf game that they know about me,” Brennan said.

Schauffele’s Late Mistake Ends Title Challenge

Defending champion Xander Schauffele finished three shots behind Brennan after carding a four-under-par 67 in the final round.

The 2021 Tokyo Olympic gold medallist remained in contention for much of the day but suffered a double bogey on the 18th hole, ending his hopes of successfully defending his title.

Schauffele said he had no regrets about taking an aggressive approach in an effort to win the tournament.

He also expressed satisfaction with his ball-striking and the quality of his shots throughout the week, despite what he described as a recent decline in his approach play.

His victory in Japan last year remains his most recent PGA Tour title.

Bridgeman Misses Chance to Force Pressure

Jacob Bridgeman mounted a strong challenge and entered the final hole just one stroke behind Brennan.

Bridgeman had been seeking consecutive tournament victories after winning the Biltmore Championship in September. However, a missed birdie putt on the 17th proved costly as Brennan maintained his composure to secure the title.

Brennan said knowing he could afford two putts on the 18th green provided some reassurance, although he acknowledged that the final tee shot was particularly nerve-racking.

Keith Mitchell also finished one stroke behind the champion, sharing second place with Bridgeman at 15-under par.

Matsuyama and Spieth Finish Outside the Top Three

Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama finished at nine-under par, receiving support from home fans but falling short of the leading contenders.

Three-time major champion Jordan Spieth posted a final-round 67 to finish at 11-under par. The American was seeking his first PGA Tour victory since April 2022.

Two-time major champion Collin Morikawa, who won the tournament in Japan in 2024, ended his campaign at six-under par.

Brennan’s latest triumph adds another milestone to his rapidly developing career and underlines his ability to convert strong performances into victories on the PGA Tour.
