Verstappen Faces Singapore Test After Malaysia Revival

Despite the disruption, Verstappen produced a commanding performance in Malaysia.

SINGAPORE: Max Verstappen’s recent resurgence will face a major test at the Singapore Grand Prix this weekend, with the Red Bull driver looking to overcome both the demanding conditions and his poor record at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Verstappen claimed his first chequered flag of the 2026 season at the wide and fast Sepang Circuit in Malaysia on Sunday, boosting his hopes after a difficult start to the campaign.

Verstappen Eyes First Singapore Win

The four-time world champion has never won at the twisty Marina Bay circuit, where extreme heat and humidity make Singapore one of Formula 1’s most physically demanding races.

The circuit is also known for limited overtaking opportunities, while drivers can lose up to three kilogrammes during the race. The 62-lap event can also run close to the maximum two-hour time limit.

Rain could add another challenge this weekend, with thunderstorms forecast around Saturday’s sprint and qualifying sessions as well as Sunday night’s main race.

Chaotic Malaysian Grand Prix

The Malaysian Grand Prix was delayed by around 90 minutes after a chaotic formation lap caused several cars, including Verstappen’s Red Bull, to stop because of a software problem linked to wet-weather settings.

Verstappen described the situation as “insane”, saying several cars were struggling to understand what was happening before the race finally got underway.

Despite the disruption, Verstappen produced a commanding performance in Malaysia.

A floor upgrade, combined with the Dutchman’s improved understanding of the latest-generation Red Bull, helped him secure the victory. He described the result as “amazing”.

Antonelli Leads Championship Challenge

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, who leads the championship, finished second in Malaysia and is expected to challenge for another strong result in Singapore.

His teammate George Russell endured another frustrating weekend after suffering a power unit failure while running third with only five laps remaining.

Russell, who has failed to finish three of the 16 Grands Prix held so far in 2026, expressed his disappointment after another costly mechanical problem.

Hamilton Boosted by Malaysian Podium

Lewis Hamilton will also arrive in Singapore with renewed confidence after recovering to third in Malaysia.

The seven-time world champion started the race on unsuitable dry tyres and dropped to the back before fighting his way through the field to secure a podium finish.

Hamilton has won the Singapore Grand Prix four times and will be aiming to add another victory at the Marina Bay circuit.

George Russell won last year’s Singapore race, finishing ahead of Verstappen and reigning world champion Lando Norris of McLaren.

With rain, extreme humidity and a demanding circuit potentially shaping the weekend, Singapore could provide another significant test of Verstappen’s recent progress.
