The government has increased the price of petrol by Rs2.02 per litre while reducing the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs3.59 per litre.

The government continues to impose Rs114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel.

According to a Petroleum Division notification, the revised prices will remain applicable from September 26 to September 28.

Petrol and Diesel Prices Revised

The latest adjustment comes amid continued volatility in international oil prices linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

HSD had reached a peak of Rs520.35 per litre on April 3 after rising from Rs281 per litre following the outbreak of the US-Iran conflict on February 28.

Petrol had also reached a peak of Rs458.41 per litre on April 3 after beginning its upward movement from Rs266 per litre in the first week of March.

The government has taken several measures to conserve fuel amid concerns over global oil supply and price fluctuations.

Government Introduces Fuel Conservation Measures

As part of its austerity measures, markets have been directed to close by 9pm, while fuel allocations for official vehicles have been reduced by 50 per cent for three months.

On September 13, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a relief scheme for motorcycle users, rickshaw owners and people using vehicles with engines up to 800cc to reduce the impact of higher global oil prices.

Earlier, in July, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced that fuel prices would be determined on a daily basis because of fluctuations in international oil markets following renewed hostilities involving Iran and the United States.

Under the revised mechanism, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) was given responsibility for determining fuel prices daily based on international market trends.

Previously, the government had been revising fuel prices weekly since early March while introducing fuel conservation measures amid concerns about possible disruptions to oil supplies from the Middle East.

Impact on Consumers and Transport Sector

Petrol is widely used by private vehicles, small cars, motorcycles and rickshaws, making changes in its price particularly relevant to household transport costs.

Diesel is extensively used by heavy transport, power plants and large generators, meaning changes in HSD prices can also affect transportation and operating costs across various sectors.

Petrol and HSD remain the government’s major petroleum revenue sources, with combined monthly sales running at around 700,000 to 800,000 tonnes. In comparison, monthly kerosene demand stands at around 10,000 tonnes.
