Islamabad: Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Friday rejected a claim by Afghanistan’s Defence Ministry that a Pakistani security post near the Spin Boldak border had been destroyed, describing the claim as “fake and fabricated.”

The ministry also rejected the Afghan assertion that its forces suffered no casualties during the latest border clash.

According to Pakistan’s Information Ministry, an attempted incursion in the Gulistan sector along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border was thwarted during the night of September 24-25.

The ministry said Pakistani forces responded to the alleged aggression and subsequently targeted opposing Taliban positions. It claimed that at least 13 Afghan Taliban personnel were killed and several others injured.

The ministry also shared visuals that it said showed the border engagement and the subsequent Pakistani response. State media separately reported that Pakistani security forces had repelled an attempted Afghan incursion in the Gulistan sector and that several Taliban personnel were killed.

The latest exchange comes amid a sharp increase in tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

On Thursday, Pakistan said it carried out precision aerial and drone strikes at 10 locations in Afghanistan after drones launched from Afghanistan entered Pakistani airspace. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the targets included locations used for launching and storing drones.

Pakistan had also carried out airstrikes on September 21 against what it described as terrorist hideouts and safe havens in the Afghanistan border region. The government said more than 28 terrorists were killed in those strikes.

The strikes followed a deadly attack on a police facility in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which killed more than 20 people and injured many others. Pakistan has blamed militant groups operating from Afghan territory for attacks inside the country, while Afghan authorities have rejected accusations that they support such activities.

Rising Border Tensions

Cross-border tensions have increased in recent months, with both sides accusing each other of hostile actions.

Pakistan has repeatedly called on the Taliban authorities in Kabul to take what it describes as concrete and verifiable action against militant groups, particularly the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which Islamabad says operates from Afghan territory.

Pakistani officials have also raised the issue at international forums, including the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar recently called for concrete and verifiable measures to prevent Afghan territory from being used for terrorism against neighbouring countries, particularly Pakistan.

Pakistan has also said that future relations with Kabul will depend, in part, on action against the TTP and other militant groups operating from Afghan territory.

A recent UN Security Council-mandated monitoring report said continued support for the TTP from elements within Afghanistan had contributed to an increase in the frequency and lethality of terrorist attacks in Pakistan. The report also highlighted operational links among several militant organisations.

The latest border confrontation follows several incidents involving cross-border firing, drone activity and Pakistani military strikes in Afghanistan, further straining relations between Islamabad and Kabul.
