The 800-meter freestyle relay could produce one of the most intriguing swimming battles at the upcoming Asian Games, with South Korea and China both possessing the talent needed to potentially break the seven-minute barrier.

Only three nations have previously recorded a time below seven minutes in the men’s 800m freestyle relay. Great Britain has achieved the feat four times, while the United States has also done so four times. Russia has broken the barrier once.

The possibility of South Korea or China joining that exclusive group adds another layer of excitement to the competition, particularly with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games approaching.

Breaking Seven Minutes Requires Exceptional Depth

Breaking the seven-minute mark in the 800m freestyle relay requires more than four strong swimmers. A nation needs significant depth in the 200m freestyle, while having a standout swimmer capable of producing a major split can make a crucial difference.

Great Britain’s success over the past decade demonstrates just how difficult it is to consistently produce elite relay performances.

Since 2015, Britain has won two Olympic titles and four World Championships titles in the event. James Guy has been a key member of the country’s successful relay teams, while Duncan Scott and Matt Richards have also featured on all four British teams that have gone under seven minutes.

Tom Dean, meanwhile, has been another major contributor, producing outstanding relay performances alongside his individual Olympic success.

South Korea Has the Ingredients

South Korea enters the Asian Games with confidence after winning the 800m freestyle relay at the 2023 Asian Games.

The Korean team defeated China in 2023 with an Asian record of 7:01.73. China has since lowered the continental record to 7:00.91, setting the stage for another closely contested battle.

South Korea’s gold-medal-winning quartet in 2023 consisted of Yang Jae-hoon, Lee Ho-joon, Kim Woo-min and Hwang Sun-woo.

Yang opened in 1:46.83, followed by Lee in 1:45.56. Kim then produced a 1:44.50 split, while Hwang recorded 1:45.04 on the anchor leg.

However, South Korea now has the potential to improve on that performance.

Hwang owns a personal best of 1:43.92 in the 200m freestyle, making him one of only a small group of swimmers in history to break 1:44 in the event.

There is also the possibility of bringing Kim Young-beom into the relay. Kim has a personal-best 200m freestyle time of 1:45.72, which could provide additional depth compared with the Korean team from 2023.

With everyone performing at their best, South Korea has the potential to challenge the seven-minute mark.

China Could Have the Firepower

China also has a strong case for a sub-seven-minute performance.

At the 2025 World Championships in Singapore, China won silver in the 800m freestyle relay while setting an Asian record of 7:00.91.

The team’s strongest performances came from Pan Zhanle and Zhang Zhanshuo, who recorded splits of 1:44.41 and 1:44.20 respectively.

Ji Xinjie and Wang Shun also contributed with splits of 1:46.22 and 1:46
