Shadab Khan’s Maiden ODI Century Guides Pakistan to Thrilling One-Wicket Win Over England

The defeat marked England’s third consecutive loss, leaving them on the brink of elimination from the tri-series.

LAHORE: Shadab Khan struck his maiden one-day international century to guide Pakistan to a remarkable one-wicket victory over England in a crucial ODI tri-series clash at Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday, securing the hosts a place in the final.

Chasing 242, Pakistan were in deep trouble at 154-9 in the 34th over, with defeat appearing inevitable. However, Shadab produced a sensational unbeaten 113 off 96 balls, hitting 13 fours and five sixes to take Pakistan home with 17 balls to spare.

He dominated an unbroken 89-run partnership for the tenth wicket with Haris Rauf, who remained unbeaten on seven off 19 deliveries.

Jamie Overton was England’s leading bowler with three wickets for 43 runs, while Gus Atkinson and Liam Dawson claimed two wickets each.

Pakistan Collapse Before Shadab’s Heroics

Pakistan endured a difficult start as Atkinson and debutant Henry Crocombe struck early to put the hosts under pressure.

Fakhar Zaman was caught by Overton off Atkinson for 10, before Crocombe dismissed Saim Ayub for six, also caught by Overton. Atkinson then bowled Babar Azam for 10 as Pakistan slumped to 31-3 inside seven overs.

Wicketkeeper Saad Baig briefly revived hopes with an aggressive 32 off 22 balls, including seven fours. However, Overton ended his innings when Will Jacks took the catch, leaving Pakistan at 74-4.

Salman Agha and Hasan Nawaz attempted to stabilise the innings. Salman scored 26 off 49 balls, while Hasan contributed 15 from 33 deliveries.

Dawson dismissed Hasan, caught by Harry Brook, before Overton removed Arafat Minhas for one. Pakistan slipped to 103-6.

Dawson then claimed Salman’s wicket, with Sam Curran taking the catch, reducing Pakistan to 122-7. Overton struck again to dismiss Shaheen Afridi as the hosts fell to 131-8.

Will Jacks subsequently removed Razaullah for eight, leaving Pakistan at 154-9. Shadab, however, refused to give up and delivered a match-winning performance alongside Haris Rauf.

Duckett Century Lifts England to 241

Earlier, Ben Duckett scored his fifth ODI century to help England post 241 before being bowled out with 20 balls remaining.

Duckett made 105 off 111 deliveries, striking 10 fours and two sixes, after England lost three wickets for just 19 runs inside the first five overs.

Tom Banton fell for four, Joe Root scored five and captain Harry Brook was run out for one as Pakistan made an early breakthrough.

Duckett rebuilt the innings with Sam Curran, who scored 42 off 52 balls. The pair added 126 runs for the fifth wicket before Shaheen Shah Afridi dismissed Curran.

Duckett reached his century off 104 balls, but Pakistan continued to take wickets in the closing stages to prevent England from posting a bigger total.

Shaheen led Pakistan’s bowling attack with four wickets for 46 runs in 8.4 overs, reaching the milestone of 150 ODI wickets. Left-arm spinner Arafat Minhas took two wickets for 26 runs, while debutant Razaullah claimed two wickets for 38 runs in eight overs.

Razaullah dismissed Will Jacks, who scored 13, and Liam Dawson, who made five. Atkinson added an unbeaten 36 off 28 balls, including three sixes, but England were unable to bat out their full 50 overs.

The defeat marked England’s third consecutive loss, leaving them on the brink of elimination from the tri-series.

Pakistan Elect to Field

Pakistan elected to field after winning the toss and made two changes to their lineup, bringing in Shadab Khan for Faheem Ashraf and handing Razaullah his ODI debut in place of Naseem Shah, who had dislocated a finger on his left hand.

Pakistan captain Shaheen Afridi said Naseem was expected to be fit for the next match against Sri Lanka.

England made one change, with fast bowler Henry Crocombe replacing Josh Tongue to make his international debut.

Pakistan had won their previous two matches and needed just one more victory to qualify for the final. Shadab’s extraordinary innings delivered that result in dramatic fashion.
