BIRMINGHAM: Shan Masood and Azan Awais struck determined half-centuries as Pakistan mounted a strong fightback against England on Friday, frustrating the hosts’ hopes of completing a series clean sweep in the third Test at Edgbaston.

Pakistan reached 184-3 at lunch on the third day, still 136 runs behind England’s imposing first-innings total of 453.

Masood remained unbeaten on 83, anchoring Pakistan’s innings with a patient knock, while Azan Awais provided valuable support as the pair added 125 runs for the third wicket.

Awais scored 59 before edging a delivery from spinner Dan Lawrence down the leg side to stand-in wicketkeeper Jordan Cox. The on-field umpire initially rejected England’s appeal, but the decision was overturned following a review, bringing an end to a partnership that had revived Pakistan’s hopes of avoiding another heavy defeat.

Babar Azam joined Masood at the crease and looked comfortable, reaching 26 not out by lunch as Pakistan attempted to build a competitive total and force England to bat again.

Pakistan’s position had looked extremely difficult on Thursday after they were bowled out for just 133 in their first innings and then lost two wickets without scoring in their second innings. However, rain interruptions and disciplined batting helped the visitors survive and return on Friday with renewed determination.

England had seized control of the match on the opening day after dismissing Pakistan for 133 before posting 453 in their first innings, leaving the visitors with a significant deficit to overcome.

England have dominated the series, winning the opening Test by an innings and 103 runs before securing the second Test by 194 runs.

The third Test is Pakistan’s final opportunity to avoid a 3-0 series whitewash and end a difficult tour on a positive note.

Pakistan have endured a turbulent campaign, with seven players released and head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and assistant coach Umar Gul dismissed following the second Test defeat. Four changes were subsequently made to the Birmingham side.

For now, Pakistan’s immediate task is to survive and reduce England’s advantage.

Although Awais’ dismissal briefly halted their recovery, Masood’s continued presence and Babar’s confident start gave Pakistan renewed hope of making England work hard for victory.

With England still holding a commanding advantage, Pakistan face a formidable challenge. However, their determined resistance has kept the third Test alive after the match appeared to be heading towards an early conclusion.
