Ali Usman Makes History with Five-Wicket Haul at Headingley

LEEDS: Pakistan spinner Ali Usman entered the record books on Thursday by becoming the first overseas spinner in 54 years to claim a five-wicket haul in a Test innings at Headingley.

Usman achieved the milestone during the second day of the rain-affected first Test against England, producing a crucial spell to give Pakistan a much-needed boost after the hosts had taken control of the match.

The spinner completed his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket by dismissing Harry Brook, Gus Atkinson and Ollie Robinson during the final stages of the day.

Usman’s achievement ended a 54-year wait for an overseas spinner to take five wickets in a Test innings at Headingley. Australia’s Ashley Mallett was the last visiting spinner to achieve the feat, doing so during the 1972 Ashes series.

Despite Usman’s impressive performance, England remained firmly in control, ending the day on 366-8 and taking a 195-run lead after Pakistan were bowled out for 171 in their first innings.

Root and Cox Build Strong Partnership

Rain delayed the start of play until 2:45pm, leaving only 57 overs possible during the day.

England resumed their innings at 112-2, with Joe Root and Jordan Cox initially strengthening the hosts’ position. The pair added 150 runs for the third wicket before being separated.

Root scored a composed 66, while Cox contributed 73.

Dan Lawrence then continued England’s progress with a half-century, scoring 51 and sharing a 120-run partnership with Brook for the fifth wicket.

Brook, playing at his home ground, once again came close to a century at Headingley. The Yorkshire batter scored a brisk 91 from 93 deliveries before Ali Usman brought his innings to an end.

Brook had previously scored 99 against India at Headingley last year, making another near-century at the venue a frustrating outcome for the England batter.

Pakistan Face Tough Challenge

England still had two wickets in hand at the close of play and held a substantial 195-run lead, leaving Pakistan with a difficult task heading into the third day.

The visitors will aim to dismiss England quickly and prevent the hosts from extending their lead further.

While Ali Usman’s historic five-wicket haul has given Pakistan renewed hope, England remain in a commanding position and will look to build an even bigger advantage on day three.
